Painter's Way Part 2

from Bad Schandau to Pirna

(Kopie 7)

The short trip on a section of the Painter’s Way covers a total of 60 km in four daily stages from Bad Schandau to Pirna. You walk directly from accommodation to accommodation, which are located in close proximity to or directly on the Painter’s Way. As early as the 19th century, artists like Caspar David Friedrich and Ludwig Richter wandered through the fascinating landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains to study and draw the wild and romantic landscape. To this day, this extraordinary landscape, unique in Europe, has lost none of its fascination. Enjoy the nature of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains between babbling brooks, cool valleys, and on mountain peaks with magnificent panoramic views over the Saxon Switzerland National Park. Highlights of this hiking trip include the wild and romantic Hintere Sächsische Schweiz, the Winterberg, with 556 m the highest elevation of the Painter’s Way, as well as, in the Realm of Stones, the ascent through the Needle’s Eye onto the Pfaffenstein and the famous Königstein Fortress.

Tour description

  • Day 1: Individual Arrival in Bad Schandau
You will individually travel to Bad Schandau by train or car.
  • Day 2: Bad Schandau - Kirnitzschtal - Schmilka (approx. 17 km)
The historic Kirnitzschtalbahn (included in the guest card) conveniently takes you directly from Bad Schandau to the starting point of the hike at the Lichtenhainer Waterfall.
After visiting the waterfall, the path leads to the Kuhstall rock arch, which is the second-largest rock arch in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains after the Prebischtor. Don't miss the somewhat hidden climb through the narrow rock crevice, the so-called "Himmelsleiter." On the rock plateau, you can still discover remnants of the Wildenstein Castle. After descending, the Malerweg leads back into the Kirnitzschtal via the Haussteig. From the Felsenmühle, the Malerweg runs upstream along the merrily babbling Kirnitzsch to the Neumannmühle as well as Buschmühle and further to the noteworthy Kleinsteinhöhle. You follow the road towards Räumichtmühle and turn shortly before it into the Mühlschlüchte. Passing the Altes Zeughaus, you hike over the Pohlshorn and the Goldstein viewpoint to the beech-covered basalt dome of the Großer Winterberg (556m). Here you'll find the National Park Information Center "Eishaus." Via the step-rich mountain path, you will soon reach Schmilka, where a stop at the Schmilkaer Mühle with mill garden and bakery is recommended. Overnight stay in Schmilka
  • Day 3: Schmilka - Health Resort Gohrisch (approx. 16 km)
With the ferry, you switch to the left bank of the Elbe and hike via the Aschersteig to Schöna.
A short detour to the Kaiserkrone offers delightful views. Continue to Wolfsberg and then to Reinhardtsdorf. Discover in Reinhardtsdorf a gem of Baroque church architecture. The church in Reinhardtsdorf is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in this area. From Reinhardtsdorf, the Malerweg continues into the Krippenbach Valley. On the further course of the stage, you will encounter two "highlights": The Papststein and the Gohrisch are, with their 451 and 440 meters respectively, the highest points on the Malerweg after the Großer Winterberg. Our insider tip for this stage: Stop at the mountain inn on the Papststein. On the Muselweg, you reach the health resort Gohrisch. Overnight stay in Health Resort Gohrisch
  • Day 4: Health Resort Gohrisch - Weißig (approx. 17 km)
From the health resort Gohrisch, you follow the route of the Malerweg over the Heideberg to the Pfaffenstein.
Those who wish to avoid the steep ascent through the "Needle's Eye" can follow the hiking trail to the right around the Pfaffenstein for a more comfortable climb. On the table mountain, the path, sometimes narrow, leads over stairs and rock crevices to the legendary "Barbarine." According to legend, this rock needle is a petrified maiden. Via the Kammerweg, you descend from the Pfaffenstein and hike towards the Quirl. On this table mountain is the largest cave in Saxon Switzerland, the Diebskeller. From Pfaffendorf, the Malerweg leads you into the Elbe Valley and through the narrow alleys of Königstein's old town. From here, you walk via the Latzweg to the famous Königstein Fortress. Plan approximately 2 hours to visit Königstein Fortress. After a short section on the Malerweg, you reach the Biedermann Mausoleum. Here, the Thiele viewpoint awaits you with a panorama over the Elbe, the Lilienstein, and back to Königstein Fortress. If you have a sweet tooth, don't miss visiting the chocolate factory at Schloss Thürmsdorf. From here, it's only a few more kilometers to your stage destination, the small village of Weißig. Overnight stay in Weißig
  • Day 5: Weißig - Pirna (approx. 13 km)
The last stage of your hiking trip offers relaxed hiking. The trail ascends to the Rauenstein, the last peak of the Malerweg.
In Naundorf, the visit to the Robert-Sterl-House is worthwhile. The museum, one of the few original artist residences preserved in Germany, preserves the artistic legacy of the impressionist painter Robert Sterl. Past former quarries, the Malerweg leads you to the Königsnase, where another view over the Elbe Valley awaits. Just before Pirna, the Malerweg leads onto the Canalettoweg and eventually ends at the Pirna market square. Stroll through the picturesque historic old town with its elaborately decorated townhouses and discover special details like the "Devil's" and "Angel's" bay windows. At the market, there is also the Canaletto House, which received its name after the creation of the painting "The Marketplace in Pirna." The Saxon court painter Bernardo Bellotto, known as Canaletto, immortalized Pirna as the only small town in his works. Between 1753 and 1755, a total of eleven large cityscapes were created. In the historic old town of Pirna, there are many nice restaurants, some of which have romantic courtyards. Overnight stay in Pirna
  • Day 6: Individual Departure from Pirna
