A walking tour along the Malerweg (Painters’ Way) in Saxon Switzerland
Back in June 2006, one of the most romantic hiking trails in Germany was revived. The birth of tourism in the region dates back 200 years, when travellers were stunned by the seemingly endless ranges of bizarre rock formations, romantic gorges and imposing table mountains, each affording breathtaking views. Painters followed in each other’s footsteps through the generations, among them Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus and Ludwig Richter. They all followed the most popular route, which later became known as the Malerweg. Nowadays, the path extends across the River Elbe and runs along the left bank through rocky outcrops and beautiful countryside. Among the special qualities of the hiking trail through the National Park and the wider region of Saxon Switzerland: an ever-changing scenery, impressive viewing points, overgrown “back to nature” paths and the many Inns and pubs along the way. Whether you walk it alone, with a group of hikers as a leisure activity or as a personal challenge, the Malerweg is one of the most beautiful walking paths in Europe. The Way has already won two awards: A walking magazine chose it as “Germany’s most beautiful hiking path” in 2007. And a year later in a survey of German walkers, hikers made it their “Favourite Walking Path”. On this website we want to provide you with information about walks along the Malerweg and help you to plan a tour (separate print out) tailored to your particular requirements. We will also provide you with timetables for public transport, opening times of things to see along the way and much more. Kind regards, The Saxon Switzerland Tourist Board
