Pillnitz Palace & Park

Short facts

Pillnitz Palace and Park: from exotic gambling palace to summer residence - baroque palaces, botanical glasshouses and park art with Far Eastern inspiration.

Augustus the Strong once gave Pillnitz, idyllically situated on the Elbe, to his mistress, Countess Cosel. After her banishment to Stolpen Castle, the Saxon Elector had the Bergpalais and Wasserpalais built - an architectural masterpiece that combines Baroque forms with Far Eastern elegance. The palace complex is considered a prime example of chinoiserie and still impresses today with its exotic aura.

In summer, Pillnitz served as a magnificent residence for the Saxon court. Even today, the view from the river is a real experience. The spacious parks with English, Dutch and Chinese gardens invite you to take a stroll. A particular highlight is the Palm House, where exotic plants from all over the world thrive. The pride of the grounds is the 250-year-old camellia, for which a glass winter home was specially built.

In the warmer months, the three palaces open their doors. Visitors can explore the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Palace Museum - including the original royal court kitchen, the neoclassical domed hall and the Catholic chapel.

Pillnitz Palace is also enchanting in winter: the grounds are transformed into a festively illuminated fairytale world during the Christmas Garden Dresden and is ideal for a Christmas excursion.
