From Nikolsdorf, the path continues variedly through the Biela valley to the Quirl plateau, up to the proud peaks of Gohrisch and Papststein, and finally over the quietly dreamy Kleinhennersdorfer Stein to the station in Bad Schandau.
In April 2018, Sachsenforst and Lesy České republiky opened the trekking route planned for 5 years. As forestry administrations of the Free State of Saxony and the Czech Republic, we want to bring people closer to nature with the project “Forststeig Elbsandstein”.
The trekking route allows visitors from April to October to hike for several days across the border and away from settlements through the forests at the border between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Czech Republic. Along the way, it is possible to stay overnight in trekking huts and at bivouac sites of Sachsenforst as well as with tourist partners. On the Czech side, there is a public campsite directly on the route.
The Forststeig Elbsandstein is a demanding trekking route for experienced, sure-footed, and well-equipped hikers. It leads mostly on simple forest paths and roads on the left bank of the Elbe and on forestry work aisles over 100 km in 7 stages through unique landscapes of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland, known for its extensive contiguous forests, bizarre rock formations, and mighty table mountains.
