From Schöna station, the route leads southwards along the Elbe slopes into the idyllic Gelobtbach valley, then uphill to the panoramic view on the Großer Zschirnstein and further through quiet forests to the turnoff Grenzbaude.
In April 2018, Sachsenforst and Lesy České republiky opened the trekking route planned for 5 years. As forestry administrations of the Free State of Saxony and the Czech Republic, we want to bring people closer to nature with the project "Forststeig Elbsandstein".
The trekking route allows visitors to hike cross-border and away from settlements through the forests at the border of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Czech Republic for several days from April to October. On the way, it is possible to stay overnight in trekking huts and on bivouac sites of Sachsenforst as well as with tourist partners. On the Czech side, there is a public campsite directly on the route.
The Forststeig Elbsandstein is a demanding trekking route for experienced, sure-footed, and well-equipped hikers. It leads mostly on the left bank of the Elbe on simple forest paths and roads as well as forestry work trails over 100 km in 7 stages through unique landscapes of the Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland, which is known for its vast continuous forests, bizarre rock formations, and massive table mountains.
