Just past Ostrov begins the most adventurous part of the route: over lonely summit peaks, through wild rocky gorges, and vast, uninhabited forests to the trekking hut in the Beutwald.
In April 2018, Sachsenforst and Lesy České republiky opened the trekking route that had been planned for 5 years. As forestry administrations of the Free State of Saxony and the Czech Republic, we want to bring people closer to nature with the “Forststeig Elbsandstein” project.
The trekking route allows visitors from April to October to hike several days cross-border and away from settlements through the forests at the border of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Czech Republic. It is possible to stay overnight at trekking huts and bivouac sites of Sachsenforst as well as with tourist partners. On the Czech side, a public campsite lies directly on the route.
The Forststeig Elbsandstein is a demanding trekking route for experienced, sure-footed, and well-equipped hikers. It mostly follows simple forest paths and forest service roads on the left bank of the Elbe, covering over 100 km in 7 stages through unique landscapes of the Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland, known for its extensive contiguous forests, bizarre rock formations, and massive table mountains.
