From the Grenzbaude, the route goes over the highest table mountain of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains (Hoher Schneeberg – 723 m) to the campsite in Ostrov.
In April 2018, Sachsenforst and Lesy České republiky opened the trekking route that had been planned for 5 years. As forestry administrations of the Free State of Saxony and the Czech Republic, we want to bring people closer to nature with the project "Forststeig Elbsandstein".
The trekking route allows visitors to hike for several days across borders and away from settlements through the forests along the border between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Czech Republic from April to October. It is possible to stay overnight in trekking huts and at bivouac sites of Sachsenforst as well as with tourist partners. On the Czech side, there is a public campsite directly on the route.
The Forststeig Elbsandstein is a challenging trekking route for experienced, sure-footed and well-equipped hikers. It mainly leads left of the Elbe on simple forest paths and trails as well as on forestry working lanes for over 100 km in 7 stages through unique landscapes of the Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland, known for its extensive continuous forests, bizarre rock formations, and mighty table mountains.
