Gickelsberg mountain

Short facts

  • Hohnstein
  • Viewpoint/viewing tower,…

An imposing basalt dome with a clear view and geological significance.

The Gickelsberg is approx. 414 meters high and is located near Goßdorf near Hohnstein. The elevation is a striking basalt hilltop, the remains of an extinct volcano.

From a geological point of view, it is a cooled lava flow that once lay over younger layers of rock. Signs of the former magma breakthrough and solidification are visible in places.

The summit is strikingly exposed and offers views of the surrounding valleys and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Several hiking trails lead over the Gickelsberg, including the Geopfad Goßdorf, which reveals the geological features of the region.
