Belvedere "Beautiful Heights"

Short facts

Neo-Gothic tower castle with frescoes by Goethe and panoramic views over the Osterzgebirge mountains and Saxon Switzerland.

The "Schöne Höhe" belvedere was built on a hill near Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach between 1831 and 1833 on behalf of the patron of the arts Johann Gottlob von Quandt. The small tower castle was designed as a place of worship for Goethe and its interior features murals of Goethe's ballads by Carl Gottlieb Peschel. The ceiling was designed by Gottfried Semper.

From the platform of the tower, there is a wide view over the Osterzgebirge, Saxon Switzerland, the Stolpener Land and as far as Upper Lusatia. Guided tours of the fresco hall are offered on Sundays from Easter to the beginning of October and can also be booked by appointment.
