The spa town of Rathen, surrounded by rocks and gorges, has always been one of the classic hiking and climbing areas. The Bastei, the Mönchsfelsen and Altrathen Castle are located high above the town. The Felsenbühne, one of the most beautiful natural stages in Europe, is also famous. Tips for outings
The Basteiweg leads uphill in serpentine fashion to the wooden entrance gate of Neurathen Castle. Cross the 76-metre-long sandstone bridge to reach the Bastei - the famous lookout rock, 191 metres above the Elbe. Equally worthwhile is the walk through the Schwedenlöcher - a very narrow gorge with stairs, steps and ladders, and to the Amselgrund and Amselsee, which invites you to take a boat trip.
