Smallest table mountain in Saxon Switzerland near Schöna

The Zirkelstein is the smallest table mountain in Saxon Switzerland. On a wooded, cone-shaped hilltop rises a sandstone rock around 40 meters high, which forms the striking peak.

The mountain owes its name to its circular shape. It was first mentioned in documents as "Circkelstein" in 1592.

The summit is 384.5 meters above sea level. From there, there is a wide panoramic view over the Elbe valley, Bohemian Switzerland and the rock formations on the left bank of the Elbe. The somewhat smaller Kaiserkrone is in the immediate vicinity.

In the 19th century, the Zirkelstein was home to the region's oldest known bar. Travelers could get milk and bread there - an early forerunner of tourist infrastructure.
