Amselfall - place of inspiration for Caspar David Friedrich

"This is the place where the Freischütz shot his bullets" was written on a stone plaque at Amselfall around 1900. Johann Friedrich Kind, who wrote the libretto for the opera "Der Freischütz", is said to have had this exact spot in mind when he wrote the famous Wolfsschlucht scene. A wildly romantic gorge, a cave entrance hidden behind the veil of a waterfall: it is a motif that even Caspar David Friedrich could not ignore. It soon became a popular excursion destination with an inn. Today, the paths are scaffolded to protect them from falling rocks and the inn is closed.
