The Napoleon Redoubt is a contemporary testimony to the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation of 1813-1815.
The Napoleon Redoubt is located on the Schanzberg, south-east of Hohnstein. In 1813, after the defeat in the Russian campaign of 1812, Napoleon planned to push back Prussia's Russian allies with new troops. In order to secure the important transport routes to Bohemia, the local population built several field fortifications, including the Napoleon Redoubt. This had three gun emplacements. However, the battles in the region between Upper Lusatia and Saxon Switzerland were extremely costly. Napoleon's defeat was ultimately sealed by the Battle of Leipzig in August 1813, after Austria allied with the Russians and Prussians.
The Napoleon Redoubt offers an impressive panoramic view. The hilly countryside around Hohnstein stretches in a north-westerly direction. Two lovingly designed rest areas invite you to take a relaxed look back at the historical events. An information board provides a brief historical summary. In addition, there is the opportunity to end long hikes in an atmospheric way at a fireplace.
