Königstein Fortress

Short facts

Königstein Fortress with 800 years of history, panoramic views and exhibitions on the table mountain above the Elbe.

The Königstein mountain fortress is one of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe. The 9.5-hectare plateau is home to over 50 historic buildings, including barracks, churches and bastions. The 1.8-kilometre-long walkway leads along the walls, which are up to 42 meters high.

The permanent exhibition "In lapide regis" presents the history of the complex in 33 rooms - from the first documentary mention to its use as a museum. Other exhibitions deal with fortress artillery, water supply and its use as a state prison.

Special exhibitions at Königstein Fortress complete the experience. Guided tours through underground corridors or themed tours provide additional insights into the history of the building and its use.

Königstein Fortress is easily accessible. A panoramic elevator connects the Elbe valley with the plateau. There are gastronomic offerings and seasonal events such as the famous Christmas market, concerts and adventure tours at the fortress.
