Local history museum & plant garden Stadt Wehlen

Short facts

Museum and plant garden in Stadt Wehlen with insights into regional history, Elbe shipping, sandstone trade and a diverse collection of plants.

The local history museum is located in a former mountaineering shelter and is dedicated to the history of the town of Wehlen. It features exhibitions on shipping on the Elbe, sandstone mining and everyday culture and crafts.

A model of a quarry and a glass beehive are among the special exhibits. The collection is complemented by information on the landscape and wildlife of the region.

Adjacent is a plant garden that was created in the 1920s. Native plants, herbs, medicinal plants and alpine species grow there on several terraces above the town. The garden offers views of Wehlen and the Elbe valley.  Panels provide information about plants and historical contexts. The plant garden is home to around 600 plant species over an area of 5400 square meters.
