Red deer excursion "Forest and game in transition" - insights into the REDEMA research project
The red deer - the largest herbivore in Central Europe - is the focus of a research project in the Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland National Parks.
In this excursion, you will learn first-hand how scientists from both countries are researching the behavior and distribution of these impressive animals, what influence wolves, forest fires and climate change have - and how modern telemetry technology (collar transmitters) provides exciting insights into the lives of these shy ungulates.
Our experts will report on the results so far, show various research focal points in the field and give an outlook on future measures in wildlife management.
The excursion does not start at the National Park Center, as indicated here, but at a meeting point in the area of the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz, probably Hinterhermsdorf. The exact meeting point will be announced upon registration at +49 (0) 35022 50240 or by email to veranstaltungen.nationalpark@smekul.sachsen.de.
Involved:
- Senckenberg Society for Nature Research, Görlitz
- Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland National Park administrations
The REDEMA project ("Improving the effectiveness of red deer management through cross-border approaches") is supported by the Interreg program Saxony-Czech Republic 2021-2027 (EU funding ERDF) and runs until the end of 2026.
