Fritz Busch. A multimedia portrait of the artist

Short facts

The musicologist, dramaturge and journalist Steffen Lieberwirth portrays the world-famous conductor Fritz Busch.

Fritz Busch and Dresden - this topic is probably more emotionally charged than any other in the truly eventful history of the orchestra and opera in this city of art on the Elbe. Days after his first concert with the Staatskapelle in December 1920, the conductor was "still wallowing in bliss over the wonderful sound and all the wonderful qualities of the orchestra". And the musicians also felt "transported to another world" and urged him to become their leader. Twelve years later, on March 7, 1933, he felt compelled to write an irrevocable, definitive "out" in his work calendar and thus under his Dresden activities after the disaster provoked by the National Socialists surrounding the "Rigoletto" performance at the Semperoper. It was not until 65 years later that Giuseppe Sinopoli made the symbolic "genuflection" and belated apology at the ceremony to mark the 450th anniversary of the Saxon State Orchestra.

As part of his lecture, the musicologist Steffen Lieberwirth, known for his Semperoper edition, showed the sound film "Das Weltkonzert. Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser Overture performed by the Staatskapelle Dresden under the direction of Fritz Busch". In addition, early recordings of the Staatskapelle will be presented.
