Mobility – have a safer trip

Kirnitzschtalbahn geeignet für Rollifahrer© Peggy Nestler

The local public transport network provides mobility for wheelchair users and mobility-impaired people in the area in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

Travellers with disabilities find accessible stations, buses and ferry piers to explore the area in comfort. However, there are still some links missing in the chain of accessible travelling, i. e. some vehicles and entrances are not suitable or not fully suitable for wheelchair users. That’s why it’s better for relaxed holidays to be on the safe side and inquire before you begin your trip.

Trains

Deutsche Bahn Mobility Service Centre is happy to give travel advice and recommendations and to organize help for disabled persons getting on and off or changing trains. In addition they provide travel information for people with disabilities. This includes selecting where possible travel connections without changing trains as well as seat reservations and home delivery of booked tickets or the option to collect them at the new ticket machines. To ensure that this support can be reliably organized by the staff, registering with the Mobility Service Center at the latest the day before your trip by 8 p.m. is recommended.

The S-Bahn train network between the stations of Dresden-Mitte and Pirna can be used without restrictions. Elevators usually provide access to the platforms here, the carriages are level with the platform edge and WCs for the disabled are available.

The other S-Bahn train stops in Saxon Switzerland between Pirna and Schöna stations vary in their accessibility and can be viewed here

Ferries

The Elbe River is like a ribbon stretching throughout the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. At some points, ferries connect the places on the two sides of the river. The ferries are all accessible by baseplates or wedges or have ramps on board, so wheelchair users can easily get on.Here is an overview of the individual ferry connections. Please note that these data are valid for normal water levels, not for extreme high or low water. In those cases, accessibility can be limited or even impossible.

Steam Boats

Some paddle steamers of the Sächsischen Dampfschifffahrt (Saxon Steam Boat Company) have restricted access for wheelchairs.

Please register before your trip.
