Swedish holes (Lohmen)

Short facts

  • Lohmen
  • Natural sight, Information…

A wild and romantic gorge between Bastei and Amselgrund, crossed by a narrow rocky lane with steps and footbridges;

The Schwedenlöcher run as a deep gorge through the rock massif between Rathen and the Bastei. The name comes from the time of the Thirty Years' War, when villagers hid in the gorge from passing troops.

Today, a well-developed path leads through the gorge over around 700 steps. The path runs between high sandstone walls, some of which are only a few meters apart. In many places it remains pleasantly cool even in summer and in winter the green moss on the walls glows.

At around 160 meters in altitude, the ascent is challenging but easy to manage.

The Schwedenlöcher are located in the middle of the Saxon Switzerland National Park with corresponding nature conservation regulations.
