Wagner Walk: Wagner's animals - With parrot and dog through Europe

Short facts

Casual tour of the Richard Wagner sites in Graupa with Tom Adler, our research assistant. Get to know Wagner's human side!

Papo, Russ, Marke, Brangäne, Kundry, Fasolt and Fafner: some of them are characters and roles in Richard Wagner's works or beloved family pets. Wagner, the great animal lover, had animals at his side from an early age, who accompanied his adventurous escapes as dogs or commented on his life and affairs as parrots.

However, there are also a large number of animals in his works: What's with the swans in Lohengrin and Parsifal, what about the bear, wolf, fox, fish and the forest bird in Siegfried, what about the horses in the Ring of the Nibelung?

You will learn all this in a lovingly humorous homage to Richard Wagner, the animal lover and animal rights activist. How Wagner caused a number of young students in Vienna to become vegetarians and how he campaigned against medical experiments on animals should give you food for thought on New Year's Eve morning and perhaps also inspire you to make good New Year's resolutions!
