The hike begins at the Schmilka Grenzübergang bus stop. Schmilka is a district of Bad Schandau, located directly on the Czech border.
From there, cross to the other side of the road and climb uphill through the historic town centre, following the Malerweg trail. The mountaineering village of Schmilka has been an official stop on the Malerweg since 2007, with the route following the classic ascent to the Großer Winterberg.
At the edge of the village, the trail first turns right onto Winterbergstraße for a short distance, then turns left onto the steep mountain path. This path was once an important route for transporting wood and stone up to the Winterberg.
At the top, you reach Winterbergstraße again. Here, you leave the Malerweg, follow the signs to the Kipphornaussicht and keep right twice. The viewpoint is located at an altitude of approx. 460 metres on the south-western flank of the Großer Winterberg and offers a comprehensive view over the Elbe valley and the Schrammsteine rocks.
Return to Winterbergstraße, which is marked with a red dot. This marked path leads gently downhill to the junction with Erlsgrund.
Turn right here, follow the path downhill until it joins the mountain trail again, and return via Schmilka to the Schmilka Grenzübergang bus stop.
