Town of Wehlen: Wehlen castle ruins and Steinrücken

The starting point is the Stadt Wehlen train station. After the short ferry crossing, you reach the old town and continue to the market square. The Elbe ferry has been documented since the 15th century and still connects Pötzscha on the left bank of the Elbe with the town center.

There are several prominent points on the market square: the Protestant church, a new building from 1883, the market fountain and flood marks on the surrounding houses. A little further on is the "Habe", a historic bank bulwark that once served as protection against the Elbe's ice flooding.

From the market square, follow the Malerweg uphill to the ruins of Wehlen Castle. The site was first mentioned in 1269 as "castrum Wylyn". Remains of the curtain wall and the northern bastion, the "Trommel", have been preserved.

After the last flight of steps, turn right and then immediately right again onto the stone ridge. This narrow path offers a small view over the Elbe and the roofs of Stadt Wehlen along the way.

Keep left at the next junction and shortly afterwards turn left again onto the road that leads into the Wehlener Grund. The descent continues to the Grundbach, which - as in the neighboring grounds - often carries little water.

The way back continues over the Schlossberg, which you leave on the right via steps downhill. At the bottom you reach the Basteiweg, which you follow to the left. Another left takes you back to the market square, on to the ferry and finally to the train station.
