Lohmen: Via Uttewalder Felsentor to Stadt Wehlen

The tour starts at the Lohmen Meißner Hochland bus stop. From there, follow the Malerweg on the right-hand footpath for approx. 150 m along Basteistraße. At Friedenslinde - a small square with a striking tree - turn right into Uttewalder Straße.

As soon as you reach the junction of Uttewalder Straße and Wehlener Straße, continue straight ahead onto the unsurfaced Brückwaldweg. The Malerweg markings continue all the way to Stadt Wehlen. At the end of the Brückwaldweg, turn right into Schleifgrund.

The destination is the Uttewalder Felsentor, a rocky valley that becomes even narrower at the Felsentor with its huge boulders. Caspar David Friedrich spent several days here in 1800 and sketched his impressions. Before the Elbe Valley Railway was built in 1851, the route from Pillnitz via Graupa, the Liebethaler Grund, Lohmen and the Uttewalder Grund to the Bastei was considered the most important access route to Saxon Switzerland.

Where the Uttewalder Grund ends at the Friedrich-Märkel monument, you can - depending on the weather conditions - take a detour to the Teufelskammer in the Teufelsschlüchten. The short circular route begins to the right of the hiking trail.

From the Märkel monument, the Wehlener Grund gradually descends to Stadt Wehlen, passing the ruins of Wehlen Castle (the view over the Elbe valley is well worth the effort) to the market square, where the tour ends.

The return journey is either by ferry (runs as required) across the Elbe and onwards by S-Bahn or alternatively by bus directly from Karl-Marx-Platz (near the market square) in the direction of Pirna.
