The Große Pohlshorn (378 m) is a viewpoint in the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz. Away from the crowded paths, this panoramic rock is not widely known but is a rewarding hiking destination. Those who look carefully can spot the distinctive Kleinsteinhöhle in the distance. In front of us lies the Große Zschand – a wide dry valley in the heart of the national park, with forests and rocks. Räumichtmühle bus stop, Saupsdorf
Neumannmühle bus stop, Ottendorf (Sebnitz)
The hike begins at the Räumichtmühle bus stop in Saupsdorf. We follow the green line marking through the Mühlschlüchte. The first destination is the Kleine Pohlshorn (a detour to the right of the path). Back on our trail, we continue to the right and reach the next viewpoint, the Große Pohlshorn.
From the Große Pohlshorn detour, we go right (green line). Later it goes downhill, we cross the Kirnitzsch and continue following the green line uphill. At a junction, we make another detour to the Große Teichstein (412 m), which is worth a visit (slight right turn). The ascent requires sure-footedness and a bit of adventurous spirit. Eroded sandstone can be seen impressively near the summit.
Back from this viewpoint, we keep right (green line) and hike to the Zeughaus. The Zeughaus is now a small inn; next door you can visit the National Park Info Point Zeughaus. The info point provides information on historical hunting practices, including references to capercaillie, lynx, wolf, and deer hunting.
Continuing on the wide path through the Große Zschand (yellow line) to Neumannmühle in the Kirnitzschtal, the end point of the hike.
The route is suitable for children, but due to the many stairs on the descent after the Große Pohlshorn and on the Teichstein, it is only conditionally suitable for dogs.
Outbound journey: to the Räumichtmühle bus stop, Saupsdorf: take the S-Bahn S1 to Nationalparkbahnhof Bad Schandau, from there bus 241 (towards Hinterhermsdorf Erbgericht)
Return journey: from the Neumannmühle bus stop, Ottendorf (Sebnitz) with bus 241 (towards Pirna ZOB / station) to Nationalparkbahnhof Bad Schandau, from there S-Bahn S1
