Two (valleys) at once on the trail of Carl Maria von Weber
This hike follows the footsteps of Carl Maria von Weber right into the romantic landscape of Saxon Switzerland. Highlights of this route include the Rathen rock stage and the Wolf Gorge.
The Rathen rock stage is one of the most beautiful natural theaters in Europe and is inseparably linked to Carl Maria von Weber. His opera „Der Freischütz“, a symbol of German Romanticism, has had a permanent place in the program here for many years. The bizarre rocks and the mystical forests around create a setting that unfolds an extraordinary effect especially in the famous Wolf Gorge scene. Thus, nature and music merge into a total experience.
Another highlight is the mysterious Wolf Gorge at the Hockstein – the setting that became the most famous scene in Weber's opera „Der Freischütz“. Here, Kaspar conjures the devilish magic bullets on a spooky night, while nature itself becomes a co-player. The wild rock landscape with its rugged walls and dark gorges still makes evident why this scene is regarded as the epitome of German Romanticism.
