A partly challenging tour along the German-Czech border. With a bit of luck, you can see rare fire salamanders in the Gelobtbach Valley in spring. On more comfortable trails, you return to Schmilka via the Zirkelstein with a break at the Zirkelstein Inn along part of the Malerweg.

The hike starts at the railway station in Schöna and first leads leisurely along the Elbe cycle path towards the Czech border. Once here, a very steep, paved path (caution: rustic in autumn and winter) leads to an idyllic reservoir with a small waterfall of the Gelobtbach stream. The path climbs wildly uphill, altitude metre by altitude metre, always along the stream. The trail then continues to the Ziska spring. This is an excellent source of drinking water. Tasting is allowed! The path then becomes much easier until you reach the Zirkelstein. To fortify yourself, it's worth stopping off at the Zirkelstein inn, then hike comfortably back down into the Elbe valley to the Schmilka | Hirschmühle stop.

We recommend walking the tour only from the start at the Elbe, as the path to the Gelobbach waterfall is very steep and extremely slippery in autumn, winter or rainy days, and there are no handrails throughout.

No direct access by car possible. Limited parking is available on the Czech side in Hrensko. Take the Schöna | Hrensko ferry to Schöna railway station.
