From there, follow the Elbweg, cross the railway crossing, and stay on the road for the time being. A short while later, the Rauensteinweg—marked with a red stripe—branches off to the left. The path initially rises gently through the forest. Along the way, you pass the Laasenstein rock formation and continue following the red markers toward Rauenstein. The actual ascent begins at the signposted fork in the path; from this point on, the route also follows the Malerweg markers. The path becomes significantly steeper as it climbs the rock massif via forest trails, sandstone steps, and several sets of stairs. The final sections lead through the rugged, craggy landscape of Rauenstein. Surefootedness and sturdy footwear are required. The ridge path includes stairs, ladders, and—in places—narrow, secured passages. At the top, keep left initially and reach the Rauenstein mountain inn after a few minutes. Immediately behind the inn lies one of the tour's finest viewpoints. The vista extends across the Elbe Valley to the Bastei, Lilienstein, Königstein, and Bärensteine, offering a sweeping view of the rocky landscape of Saxon Switzerland. After the viewpoint, retrace your steps briefly and then follow the Malerweg markers along the Rauenstein ridge. This varied ridge path traverses the elongated mountain crest, passing through small rock passages and over numerous steps and metal staircases. Along the way, views repeatedly open up of the Elbe, the Bastei rocks, surrounding table mountains, forests, fields, and villages. At the western end of Rauenstein, a descent featuring many steps leads down from the rock massif. Once at the bottom, turn right toward Oberrathen. The forest path leads steadily downhill, rejoins the Rauensteinweg, and guides hikers back to the ferry landing via the railway crossing and the Elbweg.
