Directions

The route isn’t particularly difficult in terms of elevation, but at 21 kilometers long, it’s still challenging. In addition, there are a few short, steep ascents and descents—especially in the Tyssaer Wände—that take some energy and, to a certain extent, cost time. So you should definitely allow plenty of time for the hike—not least so you can enjoy the Benno Cave, the Grenzplatte, and the Tyssa Walls themselves, as well as the trails leading there and back.If the route is too long for you, you can cut the loop short from April through October at the Tyssaer Wände or on the way back at the “Fußweg zum Schneeberg” stop and take the hiking bus back.

In addition, the tour is also a wonderful first leg of a two-day hike with an overnight stay in Ostrov, allowing you to visit the Hoher Schneeberg on the second day. You can find a detailed route description here for this tour: From Rosenthal to the Hoher Schneeberg

The hike begins at the “Mühlsteig” bus stop in Rosenthal-Bielatal and from there initially follows the Mühlsteig trail across the field to a signpost with a red line, which points further along the Mühlsteig and toward the Bennohöhle. On the way to the Bielatal, take a short detour to the Großvaterstuhl lookout point, which offers an interesting view of a striking climbing peak and the Bielatal.

In the Bielatal, you then continue following the red line toward the Wormsbergweg and the Grenzplatte viewpoint (AP). Along the way, you’ll pass the impressive Bennohöhle, which is not to be missed.

From the Bennohöhle, the route continues along the Wormsbergweg to the Grenzplatte, a very impressive viewpoint above Ostrov, from which you can see all the way to the and which is a great spot to take a break.

the continue following the red line until, at a sharp right-hand curve, a signpost (without markings) directs you straight ahead toward the Tyssaer Wände. This trail runs directly along the border and is marked with a green line.

At the next major intersection, follow the signpost and the yellow line to the right toward the “Tiské Steny”—the Tyssa Walls.

Once you arrive at the Tyssa Walls, take the circular trail marked with a green line through the Tyssa Walls until you return to the rustic inn, the Touristenbaude.

From the Tyssa Walls\*, follow the red line through bizarre rock formations (“Himmelreich”) to Ostrov (Eiland). Afterward, cross Ostrov via the road to the edge of town, where you’ll rejoin a wide forest road and return to the “Bielagrund Forest Area.”

After one and a half kilometers, the narrow Dürrebielegrund trail (yellow line) joins from the right. Follow this trail as it climbs gently beneath steep cliffs to a bridge on Steinbornweg, where a signpost marked with a red dot and the inscription “Rundweg Rosenthal” points back toward the village.

From this point, follow the red dot to the “Fußweg zum Schneeberg” bus stop in the middle of the forest, and from there continue straight along the bike path back to Rosenthal, past the customs houses to Mühlsteig.

\*If the tour is too long for you, from April through October you can take the hiking bus to end the tour at the Tyssaer Wände or, on the way back, at the “Fußweg zum Schneeberg” stop in the forest. More information and details can be found in the further description of how to get there by public transportation.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

Sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate hiking clothing are recommended; a flashlight for the Benno Cave and binoculars for the views are also advised. In addition, hiking poles are very helpful on this trail, and it’s advisable to bring plenty of food—especially drinks —as there is only one rest stop after about 10 kilometers at the Tyssa Walls, the Tisá tourist lodge (opening hours: http://www.turistickachatatisa.cz/) or after about 15 kilometers in Ostrov (Eiland).
