We reach the rocky plateau of the Gohrisch through the narrow Falken Gorge, where two wonderful views at the top reward us for the effort of the climb! The second part of the hike is a bit more leisurely, but there are some surprises to discover close to the ground.

Directions

From **the spa town of Gohrisch**, we hike along the Stillen Grund (marked with a yellow dot, Upper Loop Trail) and past the greenhouses of the former nursery (now the Forststeig campsite). We continue on the Upper Loop Trail (marked with a yellow dot), which turns right **,** and

arrive at

the first small lookout point **, “Onkel Pauls Bank.”** From here, you have a wonderful view of the Lilienstein.

Shortly afterward, we come to the Malerweg, which we follow as it turns left. At the foot of **the Gohrisch**, we can choose between two different ascents. The ascent through the Falkenschlucht leads through a narrow rocky gorge that requires some climbing skill. The second option stays on the Malerweg. Once at the top, we’ll first head to **the Wetterfahnenaussicht viewpoint**. To get there, take a small path to the left on the rocky plateau, passing between the rocks and ascending a short section secured with an iron chain.

Retracing our steps and continuing across the Gohrisch, we reach the **Pavillonaussicht viewpoint**. After descending eastward to the saddle between the Gohrisch and Papststein, we come upon the **soapstone tunnel**, which is connected to the basalt quarry. Right at the boundary between sandstone and basalt lies a layer of brown iron ore as well as a layer of weathered basalt, known as “soapstone.” The exact age of the tunnel is unknown. Older records refer to the mine as early as 1583 as “Hülffe Gottes” on the Gohrisch. The chronicler Wilhelm Leberecht Götzinger states that the soapstone tunnel was constructed around 1750 in search of coal. It remains unclear to this day whether the tunnel was originally intended for soapstone mining or whether it was actually meant to access coal deposits (formed by driftwood in the sandstone). Since the 1990s, the tunnel has served as a winter roost for bats.

At the Galgenschänke, we cross the street. Immediately after the parking lot, we take a sharp left onto the Alte Jäke hiking trail. The trail descends steeply into the valley; we cross Schandauer Straße again at the entrance to **the spa town of Gohrisch**, walk past the forest cemetery, and continue straight ahead to the sports field. Turn left onto the Lindenweg trail until you reach the Hörnelweg. Now follow the yellow dot markings toward Hörnelteich (an Ice Age boulder). Continue along the trail around the **Folgenfelder fields**, past the caravan park, until you reach the starting point of the hike in Gohrisch.

The name of the village,**“Gohrisch**,” is derived from the Old Slavic word \*gora\*, which means “mountain.” It was first mentioned in historical records in 1437 as \*Gorusch\* and a year later as \*Gorisch\*. It remained a very small village for centuries, as there were limited opportunities to cultivate fields on the flatlands. Two hundred years ago, only about 100 people lived in 20 farmhouses. It was only with the development of tourism that the village flourished and soon earned the title of “mountain health resort.” By 1910, approximately 700 people were already living in Gohrisch. It has held the title of “health resort” since 1936.
