Directions

It’s going to be a relaxed day trip by bike off the beaten path in the Vordere Sächsische Schweiz. This adventure takes us by S-Bahn from Dresden to Heidenau, where we’ll first spend over an hour exploring the Großsedlitz Baroque Garden. There’s plenty to discover here, and around every corner you’ll catch a new glimpse of the sculptures, fountains, and orangeries. Then it’s off to the Elbe River to take the ferry to Birkwitz. If you’re looking for a quick dip to cool off, just hop into the swimming lake. We follow the D4 route. In Graupa, the next cultural treat awaits: the Richard Wagner Sites in Graupa. The composer created his \*Lohengrin\* here. After a quick ice cream break, we zoom on to Liebethal, where the valley of the same name offers a welcome drop in temperature. We continue along the upper route until we roll into Lohmen, where we catch a fascinating glimpse of the local castle. Our next destination is the narrow-gauge railway museum in Herrenleite. On certain days, you can watch the railroad workers at work. For us, the journey continues to our personal highlight—the Fiedler Dairy in the village of Wehlen. Here, you can not only visit the cutest little calves but also stock up on farm-fresh products from the milk vending machine. Our tip: the drinking yogurt with lemon—super refreshing. Just a short climb uphill, and then you can breathe in the National Park air on the way to Stadt Wehlen. At the market square with the “Cyclists’ Church,” you can either stop for a quick break or hop on the ferry and bike to the water park. Diving into the water instantly helps us unwind. And where else can you look out at the Bastei directly from the sunbathing lawn? Eventually, we’ve digested the outdoor pool fries and feel like getting some more exercise. We cycle upstream along the Elbe Cycle Path toward Königstein. At Deck 16, we enjoy a Radler, garlic spaghetti, and simply lean back with our feet in the sand, gazing at the Elbe and the fortress. Just under 37 varied kilometers—we look at each other: We’ve reached our destination in a relaxed manner.
