Games event: "Hier spielt sich was ab"
Each year during the winter holidays Saxon Switzerland is transformed into a paradise for young and old games fans. The Saxon Switzerland Tourist Association, FamilyGames and the games manufacturers SchmidtSpiele, Kosmos, Mattel and Zoch, as well as many family-friendly hotels and event locations in the region, provide a quite special holiday offering in the region.
"Hier spielt sich was ab" sees over 200 new games and classic board games be provided for people to try out for a whole month. And on the weekends, people can visit the "Big games days" with celebrities, competitions and promotions
Train days
The "train days" in Saxon Switzerland are a must for fans of steam trains and technology. Each year in April, all train attractions in the region come together to invite people to be amazed, to take part and to travel on the trains. Besides the picturesque and historic train routes, you can also discover the largest miniature railway in the world, the smallest tram operation in Germany and much more.
Rathen Open-Air Stage
Rathen Open-Air Stage is one of the most beautiful natural stages in Europe and is situated amidst the impressive rocky backdrop of the Rathen Wehlgrund. Just around the corner, you can find the original of Wagner's famous Wolf's Glen. The open-air stage is open from May to September for operas, concerts, musicals and more. The Karl May stagings are a particularly special experience for the whole family.
Sellnitz Festival
The Sellnitz Festival is celebrated on the first weekend in June at the foot of the Lilienstein. The festival focuses on traditional handicraft techniques and sustainable agriculture. Visitors young and old can felt to their hearts' content, craft with wool, make pottery or visit the herb garden and sample regional specialities from organic ingredients.
Kirnitzschtal Festival
The last weekend in July sees the idyllic and romantic Kirnitzschtal, which is situated in the heart of the national park, be transformed into a festival mile. Children are sure to get their money's worth here with the numerous creative and fun activities and demonstrations.
Christmas market at Königstein Fortress
Those holidaying in Saxon Switzerland during the festive period should be sure to visit the historic and romantic Christmas market at Königstein Fortress. The "Königstein - a winter fairytale" spectacle fascinates visitors to Europe's most beautiful mountain fortress with a unique ambience, traditional Christmas music, jugglery and more. Craftsmen and women peddle their wares as in times gone by, whilst Father Christmas surprises young guests with presents on each Sunday in the Advent period.
