Museums and more - A desire to learn

The diversity of museums in Saxon Switzerland is staggering. Topics range from regional history, to nature preservation, to everyday life in the former East Germany, to animals and plants from primeval times. You can also find one of the few original, preserved artists’ homes in Germany.

Discover history and tradition

Marie Louise Stolln

A number of museums and exhibitions in Saxon Switzerland have a multi-faceted regional orientation. You can find interesting local and town museums across the region. Here you can immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of the region. For example, you can discover historic handicrafts in the Deutsche Kunstblume Sebnitz visitors' centre or in the Traditionsstätte Handpuppenspiel in Hohnstein.

Meanwhile, the medical history collections in Bad Gottleuba Health Park provide a fascinating insight into more recent regional spa and medical history. You can experience the mining history up close and personal at the Marie Louise Stolln show mine in Berggießhübel in Gottleubatal. Meanwhile, the Pirna-Sonnenstein Memorial Site serves as a reminder to the dark years of National Socialism and features a permanent exhibition.

A representative art exhibition in the "Schweizerhaus" Information Centre on the Bastei rock in Saxon Switzerland National Park shows how artists have viewed the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The Robert-Sterl-Haus in Naundorf is one of the few originally preserved artists’ houses in Germany and gives visitors an insight into the life and work of the great German impressionist.

The Richard-Wagner-Stätten Graupa is the oldest Wagner museum in the world. The complete compositional sketch for Wagner's opera "Lohengrin" was created here. And Peter-Ulrich-Haus in Pirna, which was recently reopened as a theatre, is the oldest architect's house in Germany.

The Saxon Switzerland NationalparkZentrum in Bad Schandau is the central information point for visitors to the national park. Information about the geological background, plants and the animal world, as well as about the natural and cultural landscape of the region, is presented in an appealing way using multimedia that is accessible to everyone.

The Gold- und Mineralienerlebnisstätte Hohwald provides information about geology and the acquisition of gold, minerals and rock in the region. Meanwhile, in the Urzeitpark Sebnitz, you can trace the tracks of dinosaurs, prehistoric men and the strange primeval plant world.
