description: "A little squeaking and jolting are part of the experience when this venerable lady takes a curve. And she’s allowed to do just that. After all, she’s been on the road for more than 125 years. The nostalgic tram service in the Kirnitzschtal valley in the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz is a highlight for rail enthusiasts. This is home to the only tram in the world that runs through a national park! With just one line, it’s also one of the smallest tram systems in Germany!Stretching a total of eight kilometers, the single-track route runs from the Bad Schandau spa park through the picturesque valley—with its towering cliffs and the river that gives the valley its name—to the terminal at Lichtenhainer Wasserfall. Each of the nine stops along the way serves as a starting point for a hike into the rocky landscape of the Saxon Switzerland National Park. The line was electrified over 125 years ago. Over the decades, the railway has been modernized time and again. Today, 30% of the traction current is even generated by solar energy.Several times a year, however, the historic trains are brought out of the depot: Every year on May 1, at Pentecost, during the Kirnitzschtal Festival, and on October 3, the lovingly restored cars are in service. The “Gästekarte mobil” and the Deutschland-Ticket are valid on the Kirnitzschtalbahn."
