The hiking trail as a cultural experience

Exhibitions and display boards along the Malerweg invite you to go on a journey through the great artistic and cultural history of the region. And with a bit of luck, you may even stumble upon a contemporary landscape painter at work.

The "Schweizerhaus" on the Bastei

The Bastei rock with its breathtaking panoramas is the most famous attraction along the Elbe Sandstone Mountains Malerweg trail. Here, over 200 years ago, tourism had its tentative beginnings – with chair-bearers and a few modest bark huts. The Bastei was also popular amongst artists; both as an inspiring tourist attraction and as a subject. These days there is an exhibition featuring historical, artistic representations of the region here. In the "Schweizerhaus", an information centre for the National Park, visitors can view an exhibition providing insights into the artistic altercations with the rocky landscape.

Art history display boards

2012 saw several points along the Elbe Sandstone Mountains Malerweg trail be kitted out with new, art history display boards. Where once famous paintings, drawings and engravings were created, these works are now on display with commentary. As such, walking along the Malerweg has become a cultural experience. Each of the 13 boards features a particularly significant artistic impression of the respective part of the hiking trail. Accompanying text in German, Czech and English provides concise background information.

Contemporary landscape art

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains have not lost their draw for artists to this day. The great number of studios in the region are proof of this. And, with a bit of luck, you might even happen upon an artist at work during your walk along the Malerweg. Those not wanting to rely on Lady Luck, can book onto one of the numerous landscape painting courses or can visit one of the galleries or studios along the Malerweg.
