In the Saxon "Valley of the Clueless", far away from Berlin and the old Federal Republic, there was no West German television in GDR times. People lived a quieter life back then, recalls a resident in Florian Kunert's film - in stark contrast to the present, where the region has gained sad media notoriety due to widespread xenophobia. Kunert, born in 1989, grew up here. In his film, he undertakes an experiment: around the ruins of the state-owned combine "Fortschritt", where agricultural machinery was once manufactured, he stages cinematic remembrance for the camera and through montage. Young Syrian refugees who live there today meet former factory employees. FDJ songs, Trabants and even a horse initiate re-enactments, turning the protagonists into actors of their own stories. Archive material from times when the friendship between Syria and the GDR was celebrated contrasts with contemporary footage of Pegida gatherings.
