That’s unforgivable—and suddenly the new millennium is here, and I unmistakably reek of the last century, but what can I do?” Rose is sitting shiva. She is a Holocaust survivor. She mourns alone and shares with us her remarkable life story, which has led her to this wooden bench in her small apartment in Miami. She recounts her childhood in a Ukrainian shtetl, the Warsaw Ghetto, the loss of loved ones, the journey aboard the “Exodus,” and finally her new beginning in the U.S., the bustling streets of Atlantic City, and the salsa-filled nights of Miami. And when we finally learn who Rose is truly mourning, the story comes full circle to the present day and the Middle East conflict in all its complexity. “Rose” is a nuanced, deeply human play about memory, grief, trauma, and coming to terms with them. And yet this monologue is anything but merely depressing. Sherman’s portrait of this courageous woman captivates with its vivid imagery, surprising twists, and, not least, its indomitable Jewish humor.
