Head to the high ground
Climbing in Saxon Switzerland is for people of all ages. The unique landscape of the Elbsandsteingebirge (Elbe Sandstone Mountains) offers not only breathtaking scenery but holds many a challenge for climbers. The experience of climbing a rock face in nature's own theatre is second to none.
Experienced climbers from all over the world, as well as people who are still learning to climb, have a choice of 15,000 ways to the top.
There are few restrictions, and those that do exist are there to protect nature. Some routes are more popular than others because of the views they afford and the degree of difficulty of the climb. Activity is governed by "Saxonian Climbing Rules", which are designed to protect the delicate sand stone and the ecology and environment of the National Park. For example, safety tools made of metal (clip wedges etc) are prohibited. Only traditional tools, such as slings and ropes, are permitted. The rope can only be used for safety and abseiling. Damage to, or alteration of, the rock surface is prohibited, apart from the use of fixing hooks by the lead climber. Use of chemicals, such as magnesium, is prohibited, as is climbing on wet or brittle rocks.
